¿Qué es esto?: esto, eso and 'that one'
and point at something with no noun; and on their own mean this one and that one, and still agree.
The short version
never goes before a noun
¿ ? .
Why?Hide
, and point at something with no noun: an unknown object, an idea, something just said. ¿ ? asks what a thing is. The moment you name it, switch back to the gendered form: . And or on its own means this one or that one, still agreeing.
este vs esto: gendered or neuter
Beside the twelve gendered forms sit three neuter ones: , and . They never go before a noun. They point at something with no noun: an unknown object, an idea, a situation.
| este (gendered) | esto (neuter) | |
|---|---|---|
| Before a noun | yes: | never |
| Points at | a thing you can name | an unknown thing, an idea |
| Forms | , , , | only |
¿ ?- What is this? (you don't know what it is).- I don't like that. (something just said).- That was a disaster. (a past event)
Once you name the thing, switch back to the gendered form:
¿ ? . .- What's this? It's a book. This book is for you.
Introducing someone uses the gendered form, because the person has a gender:
.- This is my brother..- This is my mother.
Adjective or pronoun: saying "that one"
The same words stand alone to mean "this one" and "that one". They still agree with the noun they replace:
¿ ? .- Which book do you want? That one.¿ ? .- Which house? That one over there.
Since 2010 the recommends no accent on these (, not ); since 2023 it tolerates one only where the sentence would otherwise be ambiguous. The demonstrative pronouns page covers this use in full.
Going further: The chart: all twelve forms and the rest of the guide, when you want them. This lesson does not need them.
