Ch 2 · Lesson 44

Telling the time: es la una, son las dos

¿ ? , but : the hours in Spanish, built from the numbers you know.

The short version

, but

, .

It's two o'clock, not one o'clock.
Why?

The hidden word is , hour. Three o'clock is (), plural, so the verb is plural: . One o'clock is , singular: . The hour you name decides it, so quarter to one, , is singular too.

Ask ¿ ? and answer . Minutes go on with y (and) up to the half hour, and come off the next hour with (minus) after it. Two things catch English speakers: the plural, and its one exception:

  • . - It's three o'clock.
  • . - It's one o'clock.

  • ¿ ? - What time is it?
  • . - I haven't got time.
  • . - It's the first time.

Es la una, son las dos

Every hour from two to twelve is plural, because you are counting hours. One o'clock is a single hour, so the verb and article are singular:

ClockSpanishEnglish
1:00 .It's one o'clock.
1:30 .It's half past one.
2:00 .It's two o'clock.
12:00 .It's twelve o'clock.
12:45 .It's quarter to one.
Four alarm clocks in a row, with tick marks but no numbers: the first shows one o'clock, the second two o'clock, the third half past two and the fourth quarter to three. The hour hand is black and the minute hand red.

  2. .
  3. .
  4. .

One o'clock is singular, es la una; every other hour is plural, son las dos. Quarter to three already names las tres.

The hour you name decides the verb. Quarter to one names , so it is singular even though the clock still shows twelve.

Going further: Y and menos: the minutes and the rest of the guide, when you want them. This lesson does not need them.
