The gate closed behind us.
is transitive and stays that way, so something has to be shut. If the door shuts itself, you need i: is, not . That is the single commonest slip English speakers make here, because English lets the same verb swing both ways. The opposite is the entirely regular , and ferm- also gives you for closed as a state and o for a fastener or clasp. For shops and offices Esperanto is happy with either verb: or as sesa.
