How Brazilian Portuguese works
Familiar Romance grammar and a sound system that is anything but. Why reading runs so far ahead of listening, and what to do about it.
The short version
- This course teaches Brazilian, deliberately and explicitly. The two varieties diverge enough that teaching one without naming it is a disservice.
- The grammar is familiar Romance territory. Gendered nouns, conjugated verbs, no cases. Little here will shock a Spanish or French learner; the personal infinitive is the one genuine novelty.
- The difficulty is almost entirely in the sound. Nasal vowels English has no equivalent for, and a spoken form further from the written one than you expect.
- This course is ten chapters and about 1,000 words, with a short story at the end of every chapter. That takes you through A1 with a first look at A2 grammar. A separate GCSE track follows the Pearson Edexcel exam.
