Ch 1 · Lesson 15

O, a, um, uma: the articles

The has four forms and a has four, and each matches its noun, never the speaker: o , a , .

The short version

A man's house is still a

Pedro .

Pedro's house is new.
Why?

A Portuguese article agrees with its noun, never with the speaker or the owner. is feminine, so a man talking about his own house says a , and a woman talking about her car says o .

Portuguese articles change their ending to agree with the noun, the way an adjective does, and they vanish in places where English insists on a. This page covers both: the eight forms, the contractions, and the five places and disappear.

The definite articles: o, a, os, as

The definite article, English the, has four forms, one for each gender and number. It agrees with the noun:

PortugueseEnglish
the car
the house
the cars
the houses

The article agrees with the noun, never with the speaker or the owner. A man talking about his own house still says , because is feminine:

  • Pedro . - Pedro's house is new.

The ending usually tells you the gender (- masculine, - feminine), with a few famous exceptions:

  • - the day (masculine, despite the -)
  • - the hand (feminine, despite the -)
A table with a pink scalloped tablecloth, set with a loaf of bread, a wedge of cheese with holes, a jug of water, a bottle of orange juice, a bowl of fruit and a cake with a cherry on top, several of them smiling.

Every noun brings its own the: o pão, o suco and o bolo are masculine, a água is feminine, as frutas are plural. (EP says o sumo for juice.)

Portuguese noun gender and plurals has the full set of clues.

The indefinite articles: um, uma, uns, umas

The indefinite article, a or an, also has four forms, because Portuguese gives it a plural English does not have:

PortugueseEnglish
a car
a house
some cars
some houses

and mean some or a few. English says plain friends came; Portuguese can mark the plural with the article:

  • . - Some friends came.
