Ch 1 · Lesson 26

Não... nada, não, não: Portuguese doubles its negatives

or after the verb keeps in place; before the verb does the job alone. And a no answer often says twice.

The short version

: Portuguese keeps both negatives

, .

No, I don't have anything.
Why?

When , or after the verb, stays in front of it: , I don't know anything. Put the negative word before the verb and goes: . A no answer often doubles too: , .

A second negative word: não stays

English avoids stacking two negatives. Portuguese stacks them. The position of the negative word ( nothing, nobody, never) decides whether is needed:

Negative wordExampleEnglish
after verb .I don't see anything.
after verb .I don't know anyone.
after verb .I'm never going.
before verb .Nobody knows.
before verb .I never eat meat.

After the verb, is compulsory. Before it, disappears. ... , neither... nor, follows the same logic:

  • . - I eat neither meat nor fish.
On a table, a smiling blue bowl heaped with steaming porridge and berries, a spoon standing in it, beside a sleepy green bowl that has been eaten clean, the spoon resting inside and a few crumbs left.
  1. .
  2. .

The empty bowl: não before the verb and nada after it, both at once. (EP says não há nada.)

Answering no: não twice

Portuguese usually answers a yes-or-no question by repeating the verb. A negative answer repeats it with in front, so the reply often has two:

QuestionAnswerEnglish
?, .Do you have a car? No, I don't.
?, .Do you speak English? No, I don't.
?, .Do you like coffee? No, I don't.

The first answers, the second negates. Dropping the second, , , contradicts itself: the first word says no, the verb says yes.

can also turn a statement into a question, as in , ?, it's cold, isn't it? That has a page of its own.
