Saying no: não before the verb

English builds a negative with a small machine: do or does, then not, then the bare verb. Portuguese needs one word, não, in one fixed place: straight in front of the verb.

• Eu não sei. - I don't know.

Não goes in front of the verb

That is the core rule. Nothing else changes: no helper verb, no change to the verb's ending.

• Ela não trabalha aos domingos. - She doesn't work on Sundays.
• Nós não somos brasileiros. - We aren't Brazilian.
• Não tenho carro. - I don't have a car.
• Não estou cansado. - I'm not tired.
• Não gosto de café. - I don't like coffee.

No verb has a special negative form, not even the two verbs to be: não simply goes in front. A verb that brings a preposition keeps it, as gostar de does above.

Two verbs: não goes before the first

When ir, poder, querer or estar introduces a second verb, não goes in front of the first, conjugated one:

• Ela não vai sair hoje. - She isn't going out today.
• Eles não querem comer. - They don't want to eat.
• Ela não está estudando. - She isn't studying.
• EP: Ela não está a estudar. - She isn't studying.

Moving não to the second verb changes what is denied:

• Eu não posso ajudar. - I can't help.
• Eu posso não ajudar. - I could choose not to help.

Compound tenses work the same way: não goes before ter, never between ter and the participle. Ela não tinha visto o filme., she hadn't seen the film.
