Where sed simply corrects and autem contrasts quietly from second position, at breaks in: it introduces an objection, a change of speaker, or the imagined complaint of an opponent. It stands first in its clause, always. In plain prose sed is the safe default, and at is what you reach for when the sentence should sound like an interruption.
