is the arm from shoulder to wrist and nothing more; the hand on the end of it is . English is loose about this and lets "arm" swallow the hand, which is why learners write when they mean a handshake. The root earns its keep in compounds: is to hug, literally to do something with your arms, and brakseĝo is an armchair. Note also that Esperanto is happy with the plain article where English insists on a possessive: is the natural phrasing, not , unless the owner is genuinely in doubt.
