carries both English senses: to attempt something, and to test a thing to see whether it works. It takes an infinitive straight off, with no preposition in between, so and never . Where is about the attempt, and are about the effort poured into it, which is why a tired person rather than . The root gives provo for an attempt or an experiment, elprovi for putting something properly through its paces, and is a separate root entirely, so do not read it as a relative.
