Aujourd'hui est un adverbe temporel signifiant "this day, today". Sa construction étymologique est remarquable : au + jour + de + hui où hui est l'ancien français pour "ce jour" (du latin hoc die). Littéralement : "to the day of today". En argot contemporain, on entend parfois au jour d'aujourd'hui - pléonasme généralement déconseillé.

Aujourd'hui même (this very day, today itself) renforce l'immédiateté. Dès aujourd'hui (from today, starting today) et à partir d'aujourd'hui (from today on) annoncent un changement. De nos jours est légèrement plus général qu'aujourd'hui mais souvent interchangeable pour désigner l'époque contemporaine.
