is transitive: you turn something. If you turn yourself, say sin or i, because a bare leaves the listener waiting for the object that never arrives. English lets one verb do both jobs and this is where that habit costs you. Note the direction endings in the last example: and take -n because they answer where to, not where. i is to turn back, and is a single turn or a bend in a road.
