Ankoraŭ says a situation has not changed yet, and its opposite number is jam, which says it has. Put it with a negative and you get the English "not yet": li ankoraŭ ne venis. The ŭ at the end is a consonant, not a vowel, so the word is two syllables and the stress falls on the ko.
