est le comparatif et superlatif irrégulier de bien (adverbe) - ne pas confondre avec meilleur, comparatif de bon (adjectif). Parler mieux (to speak better) vs un meilleur orateur (a better speaker). Cette distinction est fondamentale et fréquemment confondue.
De mieux en mieux (better and better) exprime une progression. Faire de son mieux (to do one's best) et au mieux (at best) sont très courants. Aimer mieux + infinitif (to prefer to) est une construction fréquente à l'oral : j'aime mieux rester à la maison (I'd rather stay home). Valoir mieux (to be better) s'emploie souvent dans il vaut mieux.
