En comparatif (plus grand), l'adverbe d'intensite (plus souvent) et l'addition, le s final est prononce devant une voyelle (/plyz avɑ̃/) et muet devant une consonne (/ply viːt/). Dans la negation ne...plus (je n'en veux plus), le s est toujours muet (/ply/).

La confusion phonetique entre plus positif et plus negatif piege les apprenants a l'ecoute. En contexte, le sens est toujours clair : la presence ou l'absence de ne (meme sous-entendu a l'oral) et la logique de la phrase guidaient l'interpretation. La locution de plus en plus (more and more) merite d'etre apprise comme bloc.
