est l'adverbe antonyme de tôt (early). Il est invariable et s'emploie sans article. Plus tard (later) est extrêmement fréquent pour différer une action : on en parlera plus tard. Tard dans la nuit (late into the night) et tard le soir (late in the evening) sont des locutions descriptives.
Au plus tard (at the latest) fixe une limite temporelle dans les engagements : renvoie-moi ça au plus tard vendredi. Tôt ou tard (sooner or later) exprime l'inévitabilité d'un événement. Il est tard (it's late) vs il se fait tard (it's getting late) - la forme progressive se faire rend compte du passage du temps.
