exprime la durée ou la simultanéité. Pendant + durée chiffrée (pendant trois heures, pendant deux ans) désigne une période délimitée et révolue. La distinction fondamentale avec depuis : depuis implique une durée qui continue jusqu'au présent (je travaille ici depuis trois ans) tandis que pendant désigne une durée passée achevée.
Pendant que + indicatif (while, whilst) exprime deux actions simultanées : pendant qu'il cuisinait, elle lisait. En attendant (in the meantime) peut parfois remplacer pendant ce temps. Pendant ce temps (meanwhile, during that time) est une locution narrative très courante dans les récits.
