Translation

but

Examples

, .

I want to come, but I cannot.

, .

He said that, but it is not the truth.

, .

She is tall, but not very tall.

, .

We have not much time, but we shall come.

, .

Not I, but he said that.

sets two things against each other and takes a comma before it in careful writing. It also does the corrective job of German sondern, as in , , "not me but him". Where English happily opens a sentence with "But", Esperanto usually reaches for ("however") in that slot and keeps between the two halves it joins.
