sed

Sed sets two things against each other and takes a comma before it in careful writing. It also does the corrective job of German sondern, as in ne mi, sed li, "not me but him". Where English happily opens a sentence with "But", Esperanto usually reaches for tamen ("however") in that slot and keeps sed between the two halves it joins.
