Word origin
From Latin ibi ('there, in that place'), though some accounts trace it instead to hic ('here'). The adverbial pronoun developed in Old French to mean 'there' and 'to it'.

Y est un pronom adverbial qui remplace un complément de lieu (j'y vais = je vais là-bas) ou un complément introduit par à (j'y pense = je pense à cela). Sa place est toujours avant le verbe, sauf à l'impératif affirmatif où il se place après (vas-y, allons-y). Dans la locution il y a (there is / there are), le y est figé et ne remplace rien.
Le piège courant est de confondre y avec en : y remplace un groupe introduit par à ou un lieu, en remplace un groupe introduit par de ou une quantité. Je pense à Paris > j'y pense ; je viens de Paris > j'en viens. Les deux pronoms ne sont jamais interchangeables.
