Este is the masculine-singular demonstrative for something physically or conceptually near the speaker. The four other forms - feminine esta, masculine plural estos, feminine plural estas, and neuter esto - all share this lemma page.
The neuter esto refers to concepts, actions, or situations rather than specific gendered nouns. Use it for the moment before you name the thing, for abstract ideas, or to refer back to an entire clause just mentioned. Once you know the noun's gender, switch to este or esta.
The Real Academia made the diacritic on éste, ésta, éstos, éstas optional in 2010 and now recommends the unaccented forms in all uses. Older texts and traditionalists still write the accent on the pronoun use.
